Seville
"Seville Tiene un Color Special" - lyrics and music by Los Del Rio
"... Seville makes the sky fall in love
To dress it in blue
Even the sun sleeps in Triana
And the moon in Santa Cruz
Seville has a special color
Seville has a special charm
It still smells like orange blossom...."

Our last stop is in Seville. We go to the Basilica de la Macrena which houses the famous weeping virgin statute. She is surrounded by relics, is clothed in very ornate and embroidered robes, wears a golden crown and cries diamond tears. She is considered the patron saint of bullfighters and the Spanish gypsies. Attached to the basilica is a museum that has some of the platforms that are used for the processions during holy week, as well as the robes that are put on the statues (in case they get cold?) The craftsmanship is exquisite and all done by hand.

Later in the early evening we go to see flamenco dancing and music. Though my Spanish is rudimentary, I recognize the words about long lost love and heartbreak, the universal theme of all songs. I loved you, you left me, I will never be the same, and how can I go on?

After the flamenco dancing, we sit by the cathedral and watch as several wedding parties and families arrive. They are all dressed to the hilt, as though they are going to an inaugural ball. No tan khakis and blue sport coats at this function. All the women are wearing long dresses and very trendy hair styles. I, on the other hand, am sitting on a bench and eating an ice cream in my travel clothes while watching the procession.
